Married At First Sight Mzansi has afforded South Africans the opportunity to believe in the institution of marriage and the very notion of love itself. ‘Sight’ is not always just about what you see, but rather what you are willing to discover in an individual. Discovering the character traits that teach you to compromise, the behaviours that need to be unlearnt as a means to cleave to the envisaged love or it may just look like healing from a previous relationship that almost broke you.
The test? Realising that real connections are rare, and rare connections are real. The choice is always yours to make for the taking. Season 2 necessitated a deep introspection from the cast members and further confronted them with the following question; WHY do they REALLY want to get married and what makes them think they are ready? Are they prepared to choose consistency over chemistry, reliability over romance and someone who will show up for them more than the sparkles…Beliefs were challenged, emotions were high and expectations clashed.
Through it all, the highest form of respect in a marriage is the ability to still hold your partner at the highest esteem, even when you disagree. It is choosing connection over convenience and peace over a recurring pattern. Respect is creating an enabling environment where love can grow without chaos. It is being in a union where you are celebrated and not tolerated. Respect is when you are seen, heard and held in the utmost confidence. Contrary to popular belief, marriage should be the safest place in the world.
I have had the pleasure of working with Thabang Mashigo on two emotionally profound and socially impactful docu-reality television productions. We first met on the set of the Mzansi Magic docu-reality program ‘As’qoqeni’, where I served as Director and Thabang worked as both Presenter and Therapist. Currently, we are collaborating once again on ‘Bare As I Am’, airing on SABC1, where she continues her role as the in-house therapist.
